PRESENTATION
The 9th International Photo Competition on “Earthen architectures: landscapes of architectures” is an initiative of the Municipality of Casalincontrada, in the Italian province of Chieti and the Documentation Centre on Earth Architectures, Terrae onlus Association The “rediscovery” of the knowledge linked to earthen architecture recomposed in images, like tiles of a mosaic made of people, things, material and places. Images that could be interpreted as “surviving structures” or “new scenarios”, as well as architectures of the territory, memories and situations.

Terres, d’Afrique et d’Ailleurs

The 2nd Pan African Cultural Festival in Algiers, Algeria includes an exhibit and symposium entitled Terres, d’Afrique et d’Ailleurs, sponsored by the Algerian Ministry of culture and curated by architect Yasmine Terkhi, which facilitated the participation of 19 artisans from 5 countries (Burkina Faso, Nigeria, Niger, Ghana, Nigeria, Algeria) who prepared wall panels in earth using indigenous techniques and motifs from the communities they represented. Invited speakers to the symposium include Ronald Rael, Hubert Gillaud, Hugo Houben, Salma Damluji, Marcello Cortes, Laetitia Fontaine and many other internationally renowned experts in the field of earth architecture.

X Seminario Iberoamericano de Arquitectura y Construcción con Tierra

X Seminario Iberoamericano de Arquitectura y Construcción con Tierra Salto (Uruguay) del 8 al 13 de noviembre de 2010. Tematicas del seminario: Diseño contemporáneo de las arquitecturas de tierra, innovaciones en los componentes constructivos, capacitación y transferencia de las tecnologías y arquitectura de tierra en el contexto del desarrollo sostenible. TerraBrasil 2010 – A Call for Abstracts

The third annual Brazilian Congress on Architecture and Earth Building, also known as TerraBrasil 2010, will take place in the city of Campo Grande, in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul (MS), Brazil from August 31st to the September 3rd, 2010. The Congress is being organized by the Structural and Civil Engineering Department (DEC/CCET) of the Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul, in partnership with the TerraBrasil Network (Rede TerraBrasil).

ABSTRACTS
Abstracts are being accepted and should be emailed to terrabrasil.art@gmail.com , up until March 10th, 2010, according to the abstract format available for download at www.terrabrasil2010.wordpress.com

THEMES
Scientific papers will be accept in any branch of knowledge linked with the theme “Architecture and Construction with Earth”, and will be classified under the following areas:

1. Building Materials and Techniques
Contributions and improvements to the state of art, materials` specification, new techniques development, equipments, standardization for codes and performance – structural, durability, suitability,and comfort.

2. History, Conservation, and Heritage
Reviews, discussion, and contributions on conservation theories, revival techniques, rehabilitations, and new materials` adaptations to the codes.

3. Contemporary Architecture
Discussions on new challenge — productivity, building details, costs, materials` interface, adaptations, and appropriateness.

4. Education, Formation, and Qualification
Discussions and contributions on the practices, experiences and models of technology transference, databases, and curriculum.

5. Sustainability
Holistic approach of sustainability and its multiple dimensions — environmental, social, cultural, economic, and political. Discussions and constributions on the life-cycle analysis, including social and economic, empowerment, community cooperation, and Chagas` disease.

Ma Terre Première Pour Construire Demain is an exhibition on earth raw as a building material as it pertains to environmental, economic and aesthetic of today and tomorrow. The first exhibition of this magnitude on the subject, Ma Terre Première Pour Construire Demain reveals the full potential of this granular material found in geology, physics, architecture and art. The exhibition was produced in collaboration with the research laboratory of the Ecole Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture de Grenoble, CRATerre. Ma Terre Première Pour Construire Demain is co-produced with four regional agencies as the host in turn until 2013: The Flying Strasbourg, the Science Forum Villeneuve d’Ascq, the Pont du Gard and Confluence Museum in Lyon.

Objetivos
Ambos Seminarios apuntan a un doble objetivo: por una parte, reunir a los científicos, tecnólogos y profesionales que trabajan en torno al tema para analizar, desde el pasado hacia el presente, tanto lo referente al patrimonio cultural, como al estado actual de la tecnología de construcción con tierra. Por otra, habilitar un espacio de discusión que permita examinar el desarrollo de los programas y proyectos en marcha, evaluando posibles resultados hacia futuro.

En tal sentido, las acciones fundamentales se dirigen a actualizar, registrar, discutir y difundir los avances producidos en las investigaciones tecnológicas y las innovaciones propuestas para el diseño, la producción y la conservación de la arquitectura de tierra en diversos contextos regionales. Al mismo tiempo, estimular el intercambio de experiencias, fortalecer las relaciones técnico-científicas entre organismos, centros de investigación y profesionales de Iberoamérica vinculados a la disciplina y trazar los lineamientos de posibles programas que puedan implementarse en el futuro.
Destinatarios
Los Seminarios están dirigidos a profesionales arquitectos, ingenieros civiles y constructores, ambientalistas, geólogos, antropólogos; a maestros de obra, artesanos, técnicos y estudiantes de cualquiera de estas disciplinas.

Áreas temáticas
A fin de permitir una evaluación general del campo del saber y práctica del arte, las conferencias, ponencias de base, comunicaciones, pósters o exposición de trabajos se encuadrarán en las siguientes áreas temáticas:

I_ Presente y porvenir de la arquitectura y de la construcción con tierra: El estado del arte; problemas críticos relevados

II_Arquitectura de tierra y medio ambiente: Creatividad y sustentabilidad

III_Investigación y desarrollo tecnológico: Materiales, componentes, sistemas y procesos constructivos. Resistencia y durabilidad / Sismo y humedad

Se podrá participar en este evento en calidad de ponente, expositor o asistente. La presentación de trabajos -ponencias, comunicaciones, póster o afiches- deberán ser inéditos y encuadrarse en alguna de las citada áreas temáticas.

Se enviarán resúmenes en archivo tipo MS Word, con una extensión de 250 palabras como mínimo y 500 como máximo. Formato A4, con márgenes, superior 3cm.; izquierdo 3cm.; derecho e inferior 2,5cm.

Earth Architecture at Berkeley

If you are in the Bay Area, I’ll be presenting my book, Earth Architecture, along with presentations of other new books by colleagues Professor René Davids, author of “Detail in Process” and Assistant Professor Andrew Shanken, author of “194X: Architecture, Planning, and Consumer Culture on the American Homefront” at 6:30pm, Wednesday, February 11 in 112 Wurster Hall Auditorium on the University of California at Berkeley Campus. There will be a book release celebration following the lecture.

NOCMAT 2022

NOCMAT 2022, the 18th International Conference on Non-Conventional Materials and Technologies, was held as a global virtual forum from June 7 to June 23, 2022. It brought together researchers, architects, engineers, and practitioners to advance the role of non-conventional materials in shaping a more sustainable and equitable built environment.

Framed under the theme “Turning Non-conventional into Non-negotiable,” the conference positioned alternative materials—such as earth, bamboo, bio-based composites, and recycled resources—not as marginal solutions, but as essential components of future construction practices. 

The conference addressed a wide spectrum of topics, including earth-based construction (rammed earth, adobe, cob), bio-based and natural materials, circular material systems, and emerging innovations such as mycelium. It also emphasized socio-technical dimensions, exploring how material choices intersect with cultural practices, community engagement, and issues of equity and accessibility. 

Beyond material experimentation, NOCMAT 2022 foregrounded the urgency of climate-responsive design and low-carbon construction, advocating for approaches that integrate local knowledge, resource efficiency, and environmental responsibility. In this sense, the conference reframed architecture as a discipline where material, climate, and society operate as an interconnected system, rather than as isolated technical concerns.
